Tubers, which appear to be quite normal can when cut, prove to be dark-brown to black inside. The discoloured site does not normally differ from that of healthy tissue, it can occasionally be firmer and somewhat leathery. If such tubers are damaged, they are very susceptible to secondary infections. The condition is brought about by a lack of oxygen.
If the heat produced by the tuber's respiratory process is not carried away, as for instance when the storeroom is inadequately ventilated the rate of breathing increases. The available oxygen is consumed and the tuber gradually suffocates.
