The term internal rust spot is used to signify the brown spots of varying size, which under certain circumstances occur inside tubers. The spots are unevenly distributed in the flesh of the tuber. The disease does not develop further in storage. After boiling, the diseased parts are hard and discoloured. As a rule the dark discoloration is more extensive than the actual rust spot.
The disease is caused by unfavourable soil conditions and arises in conjunction with strong variations in soil humidity, more particularly if a dry summer and a late summer-autumn with a heavy precipitation follow a relatively damp spring.
